Smart Farming means that plants or animals get precisely the treatment they need, determined with great accuracy thanks to a combination of technologies including GPS, robotics and miniaturized bio-sensors (PICS). This allows production to be optimized, which means more sustainable crops and increased food safety. We need to, since the world’s population expected to grow to almost 10 billion by 2050,  boosting agricultural demand, even in a scenario of modest economic  growth, by 50% compared to 2013.

Example of key opportunities we see are:

VIS/UV absorption and Raman spectroscopy sensing modules for e.g. nitrate/phosphate  monitoring in water and soil;

NIR spectral sensing modules and components for analysis of fruit and vegetables nutrients, taste and structure insights.

Optimize food processing

The food processing industry usually works for several clients with their own specific requirements, which means a complex process within the factory. With photonics based 5G Wireless, the industry is able to optimize the throughput of the system. Sensors play an important role in accurately measuring quantities and quality of ingredients.

Smart farming

Farmers capture a lot of data these days, which enables the farmer in forward planning, learning to give plants just the right amount of water, light and nutrients at the right time. One of the advantages of terahertz sensors is that it is a contactless technology, which means it can achieve non-invasive measurement. Unlike X-rays, Terahertz is non-ionising radiation so it is completely safe on both the food and human body.
